Tinsel squishies

So Christmas is nearly here and I have whilst looking through my yarn stash lots of “tinsel” yarn. I was really hoping nature what to make with it so I thought that I would keep it simple and just make a sphere. Well that was the first mistake I made right there. There is nothing simple about working with this type of yarn.

To start f with I used the classic magic circle and thought I would increase from there every other row until I got the diameter I thought would be the perfect size. The problem is, and anyone else who has used this type of yarn can probably relate to is that it is very tricky to see where on earth the stitches are. The first size hook that I picked up was far too small. This is the size hook that I always use for my amigurumi but it proved to be too tricky so I tried the next size up and this again was too small. I repeated the process until I was happy enough to see the stitches and then I was away. I don’t normally use stitch markers but it was essential as well as counting as I did not want a wonky sphere.

Once the increases had been completed it was time to do the decreases. Now I normally only go into the front loop when decreasing to make sure that it minimises any holes showing but with this particular yarn I wasn’t worried that would happen so went through both loops as normal. Once the decreases had got the sphere down to nearly closed the fun part was to stuff it and see if it looked alright which luckily it did. I now had a lovely squishy sphere. Something was missing though. Now I love to add character to my makes so rather than use plain black safety eyes, which would have been too late to add at this stage, I went for the classic google eyes as well as a key chain so it could be placed as a bag charm or just as a key ring. You certainly wouldn’t be losing your keys with one of these!

Once I was happy with how the first one turned out now was the time to make them in all of the other colours that I currently have in my stash. I did think that I could substitute the key chain for a pretty piece of ribbon and they could become decorations for the tree. The possibilities are endless as they say. Now back to trying to fill up my lovely wire basket ...........
