Ginger kitty

Image
When I decided to take up crochet a few years ago after a long break and only ever doing granny squares one of the first things that I decided to do was an amigurumi black and white kitty. It was very much of a challenge and really took me out of my comfort zone. Although there are plenty of mistakes I am still proud of this first creation. It stands at approximately 20cm high when sitting down. Fast forward to the present day and I am back again making a kitty only this time it is a ginger kitty rather than a black and white one. Well ginger toms contain several different shades that make up their coat so that was my first challenge. Could I find yarn that when made up would look right and give the impression of stripes rather than having to change back and forward with several different balls of yarn in different shades. I also needed to find a different pattern that I could adapt to give my ginger kitty it’s own unique look. I was really surprised to find the answer to both really

Evolving cacti’s

Image
Well you may have seen my cacti that I have been making over the last couple of months. They have gone from being based on actual cacti forms to starting to show that they can have a character all of there own by adding some small black safety eyes. Now as I have spoken about before I really like plants but am not very good about keeping them alive hence starting to crochet them. The addition of eyes and little mouths on the green cacti started to give them their own personality which led me to experiment with different colours. Great for stash busting! I love how the pots have also evolved over time with going from metallic gold or bronze to black and white to all sorts of colours and trims around the pot edge. So to the latest evolvement. Whilst in my local garden centre (they also have a craft section) I noticed a basket of yarn that had been reduced. In there was a couple of balls of the most gorgeous red fluffy yarn that was half price as they were missing the paper bands that

Nesting baskets

Image
Like many crafters I have a lot f bits and bobs that sometimes I just want to put somewhere where they can be secure. I have seen quite a few posts about making mini baskets that can be used as either temporary storage or as a decorative accessory. I really liked the idea of making a set of nesting mini baskets that could be used for a variety of different items and different places that could then be stacked away when not in use. Using two strands of double knit yarn these mini nesting baskets started off with a magic ring so that there would not be a visible hole in the centre. Starting with the smallest first only a couple of rows were completed to give the desired diameter before working in the back loop only of each stitch so that the walls could be completed. To change size one more row with one more increase was done before changing direction to work on the walls. The first one (the smallest one) was done using a single layer but each subsequent size the walls were doubled i

Floral elegance - a mystery CAL in interlocking filet crochet

Image
So, this time last year I was browsing through social media, as you do in the time between Christmas break and going back to work, and came across this new way of crochet. Interlocking filet. I say new, well it was new to me but not to others. I had only ever done what I would call standard crochet to make a blanket. The usual stitches that are just switched up to create a design. Here was something that used the same stitch throughout the pattern but to make the design it depended on whether or not you created the stitch through the front of the gap or behind. I was intrigued and am always on the lookout for ways to expand my crochet knowledge being self taught (apart from being shown how to do a granny square and the basic couple of stitches when small). When I am first learning anything I need to be shown, either in person or by something like you tube. I was so pleased to see that there was samples to make and a you tube video so that I could “see” how it was done. I was really p
