Ginger kitty

When I decided to take up crochet a few years ago after a long break and only ever doing granny squares one of the first things that I decided to do was an amigurumi black and white kitty. It was very much of a challenge and really took me out of my comfort zone. Although there are plenty of mistakes I am still proud of this first creation. It stands at approximately 20cm high when sitting down.

Fast forward to the present day and I am back again making a kitty only this time it is a ginger kitty rather than a black and white one. Well ginger toms contain several different shades that make up their coat so that was my first challenge. Could I find yarn that when made up would look right and give the impression of stripes rather than having to change back and forward with several different balls of yarn in different shades. I also needed to find a different pattern that I could adapt to give my ginger kitty it’s own unique look. I was really surprised to find the answer to both really quickly. The only issue was that the pattern called for Aran weight yarn using a 3mm hook and my yarn was chunky. I trialled out using a slightly bigger hook than asked for but not too much. I opted for a 3.5mm and soon the new project was underway.

I have only completed the head and the front two legs so far but am really pleased with the results. I also had only just purchased some glass flat back eyes that had a beautiful pair of yellow with orange flecks in them. I always find stitching and creating faces so difficult as they can make or break, in my opinion, the whole project. To set the eyes I stitched over the the top half so they were not protruding and to give the impression of eyelids. I also ran a thread through the middle of the eye socket to the other eye socket and pulled gently so that was more of an indentation. The nose and mouth I knew were going to be my biggest challenge but am pleased with the finished result.

I want to give more definition to the ginger kitties toes so will probably run a thread in between them to make them stand prouder. Onto the body next and then stitching all the parts together. I am really pleased with the progress made so far and can’t wait to complete the ginger kitty and give him a name.
