Ginger kitty - The finished puss cat.
So as some of you may know I have been working on a ginger Tom realistic looking puss cat. I did a blog post about it when I had finished making the head and the two front legs. This has definitely in some ways been a challenging make. Some of my own doing and some not.
First off I did find it quite hard to work on for any length of time because of the yarn that I was using coupled with the hook size. The pattern that I was using recommended a particular type of yarn, one that I was not used to so had to look up on a comparison site what weight that would be. It recommends an Aran weight yarn. Using my lock wool store I felt I had found the perfect yarn to make a ginger Tom as it was variegated with different shades of orange as well as cream shades. The problem however was the weight of yarn. It was in a chunky weight and not Aran.
The second thing I had to contend with was the size hook. It was asking for a 3mm hook for the Aran weight yarn. Now I know that I have a slightly loosing tension than most so using this size hook I already was going to have my ginger puss coming out slightly larger unless I used a smaller size hook. Couple that with a bigger thickness of yarn I knew I would have trouble trying to crochet with that small size of hook so tried out a slightly larger one at 3.5mm already knowing that it would be a bit larger than the original. The tension however seemed to be ok once I had started making the head so I thought I would continue.
With the head and legs completed it was time to start on the body. All went fairly straight forward until it was time to attach the legs. After a couple of attempts and a will of not giving up I finally managed to understand what I needed to do to get them the correct distance apart and facing the right way. The ginger cat was starting to come alive. A couple of back feet later (it was commented on that they looked like really cute Turkish slippers!) and a tail it was down to the finishing touches.
I am really pleased on how it has all come out especially as it was a pattern that I stumbled across on a social media site with the bonus of it being free. I think my one needs a collar to completely finish it off as the example one in the pattern has. What do you think?
