Love on the rocks - pebble pals.

Well as you know what started out as realistic looking cacti’s have slowly been evolving over time. The first transformation saw them having the addition of cute eyes as a nod to the kawaii inspired amigurumi that I have seen. From there it seemed a natural step to make them in all sorts of different colours. This is also a great way of using up all the scraps of yarn that we all have. I also started playing around with different textures and have made some using a really gorgeous fluffy yarn. It made the cacti very tactile and gave it a whole new character.

So having a rummage through my craft room I came across some cute little ribbon roses. I will often acquire things that at the time I do not know what I might use them for but know that somewhen in the future they will be perfect for the project that I am working on. The majority of my cacti have a flower on them somewhere, usually on the top. Looking at these little ribbon roses it gave me an idea of whether I could scale down my cacti and if so how would I do it. Further rummaging revealed some embroidery threads, I also like to do cross stitch and have made up my own patterns from photographs but that’s another story for another day.

So armed with threads and my mini roses I set about scaling down the cacti. Trying to use a tiny hook was definitely a challenge to start off with. I am not used to using something so small. I didn’t know what these cacti’s were going to sit in so I thought that I would finish them off completely instead of just a tube that could be stitched to a crochet soil base. Inspiration came in the form of a pot of decorative pebbles that I thought would be perfect and so my pebble pals were finally born.

I love the different ribbon flowers that adorn the top of the cacti’s as they are not all the same type. I also like how the eyes are different too, using sequins instead of the usual safety eyes where they are so small. They average around 5cm high and are definitely cute. They have their own characters and remind me of photographs of wedding parties. I love my little pebble pals, they are definitely my love on the rocks.
