Baby, it’s cold outside - my snow inspired cactus

Well the temperatures have certainly dropped here in the last 24 hours. When I was a child we used to have snow pretty much every winter. I mean, real snow, not the little flurries that disappear after a day or so. Schools stayed open and we would trudge in wearing our wellies if we were sensible, changing into shoes once inside the building. We would wrap up warm and go sledging after school and at the weekends. Tin trays made good sledges and went just as fast down the hills. It seems like a different time to those we are living in now.

We seem to have an invisible shield around the Island that stops the snow from revisiting the days of past. When it does come, everything seems to grind to a halt where we are not used to it. I love the sight of fresh snow. The pure white and stillness and seeing if there are any footprints from birds or animals that have ventured across it. The slush when it starts to melt however is a different story. That I can live without. The dull grey colour reminding us that the change is happening.

With this in mind I looked through my paints to decide on a colour that would be appropriate for the pot that the next cactus would be placed in. I found a lovely metallic blue colour that I thought would pick up the sparkle of the ice that had inspired me. From here the colour of the cactus seemed straight forward. I had in my stash a lovely green in muted tones. This went so well with the blue. The last thing to decide was the signature flower and bunting. Whites, lilacs and blues put the last pieces of my snow inspired cactus.

I love how the things that are around us can inspire our creative projects. The changing of the seasons and the colours that it produces give us all year round palettes.
